There are about 20 monkeys living around the complex we are staying in. How exciting! We found nibbled ginger biscuits on the table this morning, so I’m guessing the monstrous beast last night was a monkey warning us off.
Marco took us on a Tuk Tuk this morning, firstly to a snack bar where he ordered us some milky tea, roti, fish roll & choc cake! The Chinese like breakfast big, it seems! We had a hot spot watching the surfers on the waves, and we may well dabble with that ourselves another day. Marco tells us in 2004, the Tsunami ravaged the shore lines, and some 30’000 people lost their lives. I again, struggle not to cry. (I’m a soppy old cow really)
We then ventured onwards to a post office to send Daddy Ann the first of his birthday postcards (stamp collector, you see!), and then to Galle Fort. The fort is gloriously hugging the Indian Ocean and we hear tales of war and fighting. The Dutch and then the English have fought a lot for this piece of beautiful land. This is the only part of Galle that did not get affected by the Tsunami, as higher ground. After strolling round, past the lighthouse and onwards to where the cannons would have been, we pop ourselves back into the Tuk Tuk. Really nothing to be afraid of compared to our rally driver of a taxi yesterday.
We head to the local supermarket to grab some fruit, yoghurt, water, loo roll among other things, and head back to Marco’s B& B. He is so generous, he hasn’t let us pay for anything today and we have had to just leave money on the table and hope he eventually gives in and takes it!
Eek there is a woman with a MASSIVE knife … it’s ok, she is hacking at bushes. Seems they have a dangerous way of gardening here.
Anyhoo.. enjoyed some watermelon and a nice cold coke, and Leon had a shower. Marco is cooking us some authentic Chinese food that smells divine, although he modestly tells us his wife is far better at cooking.
We shall head back to the beach after 5.30pm (4pm currently) as Marco tells us it is too hot now. I can agree!
I include the photo of me in the sea that leon took. Total eclipse haha!
