Off to get our hire car! We are expecting a budget, compact car, along the lines of a Seat Leon. We have a chat with the hire car lady, and she seems tickled that I am trying to talk in German. We go outside, straight past the Leon, and towards a large Merc estate. Ooooh crap, goes my brain. Leon, the person, not the car, has a massive grin on his face, eyes lit up like a child about to do something naughty. We get in, and it feels… good! Roomy, posh leather stitching, heated seats! Leon has a play with some levers, and after a few mins trying to find the gear stick, he realises it’s all controlled on the wheel. We set off, and Leon now looks a bit more nervous, but holding it together. Through a few winding streets, and we get on the B500 towards the Black Forest covered mountains. Up and up we climb, Sun seering through the bright blue sky, highlighting smudges on the windscreen. Leon’s ears pop. We pull over & take a moment to work out how to de-mist the screen & other kind of important bits!
