Girl’s hol: Day 5 – Girona & homeward bound

We started the day bright and early at 7am alarm, polishing off the fruit from the apartment, a coffee, and a corny bar (like a harder brunch bar). Setting off from the apartment at 8am to go and get the bus that we had carefully booked to go to Girona. I think the Spanish must have the same attitude towards time as the Italians. 8.20am came and went, we were slightly nervous but kept the faith! Eventually it turned up roundabout 8:30, and we were glad to get on it, partly because we knew we would get to our destination and partly because it had glorious air-conditioning. It was already stupidly hot by that time of day and Girona was not going to be any cooler, we may as well make the most of it.

When we got into Girona, we checked out the bus time and purchased a ticket to the airport in advance so that we knew what we were doing and what time we needed to be there. It was quite different to Google Maps so we were glad to get that sorted! We have been very organised and also got a locker (lock&roll) for €12 for both our backpacks so that we could explore the city without that additional weight. It was well worth it!

We wondered through the winding medieval streets, saw some Season 6 Game of Thrones filming locations (when Arya trying to escape Bravos), and loved looking at the coloured houses along the river.

We then went to the art museum (which was more artefacts), and they gave us a very handy cardboard fan. Lindsay really liked the tapestry and I liked this female lion climbing up a pole which I don’t think I took a picture of, but it was very funny looking. We went across to the cathedral, up many steps. It was very gothic and not as cold as expected.

We also enjoyed walking round the cloisters, and resisted running into the sprinkler!

On the way back down from the cathedral, I saw something that took my breath away even more than the grandeur of the Cathedral … a small white fluffy dog with its paws and the end of its tail dyed bright blue!! I couldn’t help but exclaim out loud, ‘wow! that dog has blue paws!’.

After I got over my shock, we went onwards to the Arab baths and the lighting was glorious coming through the ceiling that was different shapes of stars and flowers. This is another GOT S6 location. I’m going to have to watch it again when I get home now. Also, the arched area, and the bridge appear in season six.

We were quite hot and exhausted by this point at about 12.30, so we found a restaurant with its doors shut which is indicative of air-conditioning, called Draps. It was amazing deal of €19 for three courses and water. The starter was a slightly blue tasting goats cheese on bruschetta and roast vegetables, lemon garlic sole for main (an entire fresh fish!), and we were very brave having another catalan cream for dessert… both because we were so taken with the first one we were scared to have it again in case it wasn’t as good but I’m pleased to report this one was maybe even slightly better!

After being fully refreshed with food and cool down and a gallon of water, we set back out again not quite sure what we were going to do. We decided to head to the old walls that surround the city and you can walk around the top. This might have been quite stupid at this time of day in this heat with that amount of steps, but we were determined to see the view. After getting up halfway from what seemed like about 1000 steps, the way the map said was blocked by a tarmac machine so we went the alternative only other way and managed to get up to the walls! Wow, it was worth it!! We could see for miles. Linds was very proud of herself being terrified of heights. We walked along a decent stretch of it, and stopped to take several different photos and they did ours in return as well.

High on life by this time, we decided to take a slightly longer route back to lock & roll via the Eiffel Bridge, which is designed by the tower of the same name. We were both rather thirsty as we had sweat every bit of moisture out of our bodies. so we drank small water and got some mandarin sorbet to rehydrate.

We spotted the most giant croissants in a bakery window, but we couldn’t particularly think of food at that time after a three course meal but we did think it was very good value! We also saw a gorgeous tortie cat lazing with its legs up a wall. I don’t blame it!
